USTR Announces Additional Tariff On Chinese Products

As of July 6, 2018, an additional duty of 25% has been placed on about $50 billion worth of imports from China that are used in industrial technology. This tariff has come about due to a Section 301 investigation where the United States Trade Representative (USTR) found China’s practices and policies around technology to burden U.S. Commerce and to be discriminatory and unreasonable.

The list of products is comprised of two sets of U.S. tariff lines. The first set contains 818 lines covering approximately $34 billion worth of imports, and the second set contains 284 proposed tariff lines covering approximately $16 billion worth of imports. The list of products with the additional tariff are products from industrial sectors and are not goods commonly purchased by American consumers. The full extent of the tariff will be completed by December 2018.
